A short story is a piece of prose fiction. The short story is one of the oldest types of literature and has existed in the form of legends, mythic tales, folk tales, fairy tales, tall tales, fables and anecdotes in various ancient communities around the world. लघुकथा एक छोटी कहानी नहीं है। यह कहानी का संक्षिप्त रूप भी नहीं है। यह विधा अपने एकांगी स्वरुप में किसी भी एक विषय, एक घटना या एक क्षण पर आधारित होती है। आधुनिक लघुकथा अपने पाठकों में चेतना जागृत करती है। यह किसी भी चुटकुले या व्यंग्य से भी पूरी तरह अलग है।
